This is my edit of my favorite Greek small businesses and independent brands whose values and designs not only evoke a strong sense of community, but also joy, meraki and craftsmanship. WAKS With Easter fast approaching, whether it’s creating a beautiful table setting for dining or looking for an elegant Easter candle for the church, WAKS is your go-to Greek brand for candles. Hand-poured and hand-packaged in a small production facility in Athens, WAKS candles are crafted with Greek-ness and sustainability at their core. WAKS candles are made of a blend of soya and beeswax; they have a 100% cotton wick, while Greek traditional crafts and clay-making techniques inspire their vessels and pots. Their glass, ceramic or wooden containers have been designed with upcycling in mind, as they can be reused around the house and the garden, while also being refillable. Comprised of comforting and indulgent lasting scents designed to uplift, refresh, rejuvenate and calm, WAKS candles are so reasonably priced. This Easter WAKS candles have joined forces with the jewelry brand Hermina Athens to create a limited edition of rustic Easter candles featuring a silver eye charm, that’s bound to sell out. In the strange and disconcerting times of the corona virus pandemic, podcasts have served me as a great source of escapism, solace, educational and portable entertainment. I love to dip in and out of podcasts while walking to work, sitting in waiting rooms and queues, cooking or sunbathing. 3 Feel Good Podcasts To Listen To We could all do with a positive boost right now! Here are three of my favorite Greek feel good podcasts, which are quite different in style, but what they do have in common is a strong host personality and a positive outlook in life.
,A selection of my favorite finds of the month, hoping to offer the inspiration you need. THE BOOK: Beautiful World Where are You by Sally Rooney One of the most hyped and eagerly anticipated book releases of 2021 worldwide, that became an instant bestseller. The book is about two Irish female friends in their late twenties and their struggles to figure out how they should live and find meaning against the backdrop of what it feels like a rapidly deteriorating and troubled world - economically, ecologically, ethically and emotionally. Part of the book is epistolary , tracing the interwoven thread of two love stories. Issues of millennial romance, class, mental health, and relationships all come into play. A warm, moving, beautifully written contemporary novel with plenty of page turning emotional drama was the perfect read for curling up with a snuggly blanket and cup of hot coffee. Father Coffee is a great pit-spot for your coffee fix, offering speciality coffee made from the African house blend to a rotation of seasonal varieties from Colombia, Kenya and Ethiopia, supplied by the Pianeta Gusto roasters. Away from their impeccable coffee, they offer a selection of handmade baked goods, from French canelés and tahini choco bites, to cheese bacon honey brioches to enjoy in the cafe or take away with you. If you ask me, I am big fan of their cinnamon rolls and their chocolate-peanut butter brownies. On a sunny day, make sure to sip their cold brew on the bench outside. The cafe is also home to a record store, offering a world music focused vinyl collection, touching on everything from Jazz, Afro, Brazil and Disco, to Hip Hop, Soul, and Funk, ideal for some digging. At Father’s, friendly faces and simple interiors filled with great music create the ultimate relaxed backdrop for your next caffeine fix! THE COOKBOOK: ΔΕ ΚΟΥΚΜΠΟΥΚ by Madame Ginger My goals for 2022 include to cook new recipes and to improve my gut health. So, in need of some fresh inspiration when it comes to incorporating more veggies and less meat, gluten and dairy into meals, as well as experimenting with nourishing ingredients, I bought The Cookbook. A collection of 61 mouthwatering, easy, modern recipes with a twist, for everyone, written by the food blogger - writer Madame Ginger. My pick so far is her apple crumble with salted caramel, a gorgeous cake enriched with a caramel sauce made of dates THE GADGET: SOUNDFORM Freedom Earbuds by belkin They are my best friend this month taking convenience to another level! This newfound freedom they offer is handy when I walk, cook, exercise, meditate and do the housework. They stay in my small ears, deliver rich, radiant sound, offer up to 8 hours non-stop playtime, they are noise cancelling, sweat and rain resistant, never lost with Apple Find My app and they fit my budget. THE STREET FOOD: Horns Urban Smokehouse BBQ On the hunt for the perfect burger in the city, I came across Horns Smokehouse, an excellent addition to Thessaloniki’s street food scene. Ditch the BBQ effort at home and head to Horns Smokehouse where slow-cooked, wood-smoked meats are a speciality. Think a Texan style meat mecca and expect to tuck into the likes of beef brisket, pork belly, pork spare ribs, comfort sandwiches and burgers. Ag. Mina 7, Thessaloniki Center Instagram: @horns_smokehouse_bbq The days are dark and too short, the weather is cold and my mood is falling as fast as the thermometer. During my mid-winter blues, I feel that curling up with a snuggly blanket; a cup of strong coffee and a gripping read always help to lift my spirits. Let’s get cosy with 3 books I enjoyed reading! |
